Under contract with H2O Applied Technologies, Thermal Science Technologies (TST) and Power Component Systems, Inc. returned to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD) to install several hundred custom-made Removable Insulation Covers on steam pipe fittings and heating equipment in over a dozen buildings on campus in an effort to reduce heat losses and save energy. In addition to insulation blankets, TST also installed ASJ fiberglass pipe insulation and PVC fitting covers on bare steam pipe and fittings in many of the same plants, buildings and mechanical spaces on campus. The turnkey insulation effort took one (1) week to install in August of 2023.
The Goddard Space Flight Center is currently the largest NASA space research laboratory in the U.S. and was built over 60 years ago when NASA was first founded. GSFC consists of scientists and engineers dedicated to increasing knowledge of the earth, the solar system and the universe via observations from space. The laboratory is also responsible for developing and operating unmanned scientific spacecraft for our ongoing space program.
As part of Constellation New Energy’s Energy Savings Performance Contract to implement a comprehensive campus-wide energy efficiency and generation plan, the installation of removable, reusable insulation will recover heat losses and save the campus money as the insulation can be removed and reinstalled when maintenance or repairs become necessary on the insulated valves, strainers and heating equipment.
