TST Completes Steam Distribution Upgrades at Tuscaloosa VAMC

TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA – Thermal Science Technologies, LLC (TST) has successfully completed a project for the Dept. of Veterans Affairs that involved the thermal restoration of buried steam distribution piping at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center. TST arrived in mid-July to survey and assess the existing distribution system on campus.  Approximately 1,600 LF of distribution piping was thermally restored when ConduFill® was injected into buried concrete trenches, removable-lid trenches (sidewalk) and a section of drainable-dryable Ricwil piping. TST plans to return to the Tuscaloosa campus in the coming months to restore an additional section of piping that is scheduled for repair.

TST also manufactured and installed custom-made Removable Insulation Covers (RIC) on steam piping in four flood-prone manholes and two valve boxes on new steam distribution loop. The new hydrophobic RICs are designed to withstand flooding conditions and will not absorb water in rigorous, wet environments. The installation of RICs will allow the VA to save energy and avoid repetitive and costly replacement of conventional insulation in their manholes.
